Hiking is one of the best ways to connect with nature. As you ascend step by step, not only can you appreciate the breathtaking mountain scenery from above, but walking on the trails also allows you to engage your senses, feeling the vitality of nature. The vibrant flora along the path adds to the beauty of the landscapes. Due to geographical conditions, Taiwan offers numerous stunning high mountains to conquer. Today, I’d like to introduce five Baiyue peaks that even beginners can challenge. Pick a day with good weather, and let’s hit the trails together!
Shimen Mountain 石門山
For novice hikers looking to tackle a Baiyue peak, Shimen Mountain in the Hehuan Mountain Range would be an excellent choice. The Shimen Mountain trail is approximately 784 meters in total length, with a walking time of around 30-60 minutes. The distance and ascent time are not too long, making it very suitable for beginners and hikers. Near the trailhead of Shimen Mountain, there are several parking lots available, making it quite convenient for those driving themselves. If you’re aiming to conquer your first Baiyue peak, why not start with the relatively easy climb of Shimen Mountain?

Hehuan East Peak 合歡東峰
Among the peaks of the Hehuan Mountain Range, Hehuan East Peak is not considered too difficult to climb among the Baiyue peaks. If you’ve already climbed Shimen Mountain and are looking for a more challenging option, consider including Hehuan East Peak on your list. The round-trip hike to Hehuan East Peak takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, offering views of the surrounding peaks of the Hehuan Mountain Range along the way. The trailhead for the East Peak is near the Songxue Lodge, and if you prefer not to return the same day and wish to tackle the peak after resting, you can book a stay at the Songxue Lodge Hotel the night before and start the ascent early the next morning.

From the summit, you can admire the majestic views of the main peak and the western peak of Yushan. Prior application is required for climbing Yushan Front Peak, so be sure to make arrangements and preparations beforehand. If you wish to climb “Taoshan,” one of the relatively less challenging peaks among the Wuling Quadruple Mountains, prior permission is required for entry. The round trip typically takes 5 to 6 hours. It’s recommended to accumulate some hiking experience before attempting this climb. If you want to test your stamina first, you can start with the “Taoshan Waterfall Trail,” which does not require prior permission. After preparing adequately, you can then apply for the mountain climb.
